Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), media representatives and legal practitioners have resolved to bring justice to the family of a patient alleged to have died as a result of negligence by medical personnel of the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano.
Sha’awa Abdulmumin, a mother of four, was reported to have died during childbirth from alleged negligence.
The deceased’s sister, Zainab, who accompanied her to the hospital, according to a source alleged that the baby had died before it could be delivered but was not evacuated until two days after.
The source said Sha’awa died a few hours after the dead baby was eventually evacuated on the 5th of September, 2022.
The source said many had shown concern for the death of Sha’awa and her baby which could have been avoided.
Bilkisu Ibrahim Suleiman, the Chairperson, International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Kano Branch, in a meeting she convened said they would thoroughly follow the issue and also engage all concerned authorities to its logical conclusion.
She added, “We will ensure that justice is done and it doesn’t happen again. Since AB Mahmoud SAN is already in it, we are going to follow him to lead us to the logical conclusion.”
Shehu Abdullahi, the Kano Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria, on his part assured that the commission was committed and will ensure that human right is protected and the right thing is seen to be done as enshrined in their constitution.
He explained that the commission was really disturbed with the development, assuring that they would do their best in ensuring the right thing is done.
After a series of investigations and engaging all parties involved, he explained that they would ensure that they forward all complaints to the appropriate body.
