Adejumo Maruf, a 43-year-old man, has admitted to stealing a school minibus known as Korope.
The suspect, who was presented at the police command headquarters in Osogbo, Osun State, justified the theft on his “overabundance of love for his wife and children.”
Maruf told reporters at the command headquarters that his life had taken a turn for the worse after his wife abandoned him and took their five children with her. According to him, he had a nice life in Lagos till he moved to Osogbo around two years ago.
“I said,” the suspect said.
“It is true that after working at Criterion Nursery and Primary School in the Kelebe region for around three months, I stole a Korope. I did it to supplement my income and provide for my wife and children.
“I was living a decent life in Lagos State before things took a turn for the worst and we moved to Osogbo almost two years ago. However, nothing changed, and my wife and I departed with our five children.
“Since then, things have become even more tough. As a result, I began driving the school bus. I went inside the school after approximately three months and drove it to Lagos.
“I was operating it as a passenger bus before I was apprehended in the Ajah region of Lagos State after two days. I adore my wife and children and would go to great lengths to provide for them.”
The state Commissioner of Police, Olawale Olokode, informed reporters that the suspect fled with the bus to Lagos State, where he changed it into a commercial bus before being apprehended by the police. He added that the culprit will be arraigned in court soon.
