The International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA) has expressed worry over persistent attacks on religious centres such as churches and mosques across Nigeria in recent times.

In an event marking the 7th anniversary of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital on Wednesday, the group regretted that worship centres have become the soft target in a slightest provocation.

Also the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Sustainable Development Goals, Mrs Adejoke Adefulire who spoke at the event noted that the attacks on the religious sites is a departure from the SDGs plan in 2030 and called on the people to invest in social cohesion and protecting human rights.

According to the SA, “In Nigeria today, attacks on religious sites including mosques and churches are on the rise and often seen as soft targets during uncertainties and conflicts. Attacks on these places of worship are most of the blatant examples of lack of respect for each other and for our common humanity”

“Our religious sites are powerful symbols of our collective consciousness and the true beginning of our societies, when these places are continuously becoming under attack, our sustainable development is also under threat because there is no development without peace and there is no peace without development.”
